Discernment Counseling
Gain Clarity in Your Relationship with Online Discernment Counseling
If you or your spouse are considering divorce but are not entirely sure it's the right path, Discernment Counseling can help. This approach allows you to slow down, take a breath, and explore your options for your marriage.
Discernment Counseling is designed for couples where one partner is “leaning out” of the relationship and unsure if regular marriage counseling would help, while the other partner is “leaning in” and interested in rebuilding the marriage.
The goal of Discernment Counseling is to provide clarity and confidence about your relationship's direction, based on a deeper understanding of its possibilities. This process is not about solving marital problems but determining if they are solvable. Each partner is treated with compassion and respect, regardless of their current feelings about the marriage.
You will attend sessions as a couple, but the most crucial work happens in one-on-one conversations with the counselor. This individualized approach helps each person explore their own contributions to the problems and possible solutions, which is beneficial even if the relationship ends.
Number of Sessions: Up to 5 counseling sessions
The first session is typically 2 hours, and subsequent sessions are 1.5 to 2 hours
Discernment Counseling is not suited for situations where:
One spouse has already made a final decision to divorce
One spouse is coercing the other to participate
There is danger of domestic violence
